Custom Pond Design & Construction Done Right

Custom pond design and construction is the core of what Los Angeles Pond Builder does. We design your pond around your yard — a backyard ecosystem pond, a formal reflecting pool, a stream-fed garden pond, or a large water garden. You get a concept and layout before we break ground, professional-grade EPDM liner over protective underlayment, biological and mechanical filtration sized to the water volume, an energy-efficient pump, hand-set boulder and gravel rockwork, aquatic planting, and a startup that gets the biology running. The result is water that stays clear, runs quiet, and looks like it was always there.

How We Work

From the first design walk to the first fill, one project manager runs your build.

1. Design consultation & concept

We come to your yard, talk through how you want to use the pond — fish or no fish, swimming or ornamental, formal or naturalistic, waterfall or still — and study grade, drainage, sun, and utilities. Then we produce a concept of the pond shape, depth, rockwork, and planting so you approve the design before we dig.

2. Excavation, liner & plumbing

We excavate the pond profile with shelves for plants and depth for fish, lay protective underlayment and professional-grade EPDM liner, install the biological filter, skimmer, and correctly-sized pump, and plumb the circulation loop. Drainage and any required permits handled by us.

3. Rockwork, planting & startup

Our crew hand-sets boulders and gravel to hide the liner and build the naturalistic edge, plants the marginal and aquatic plants, fills and dechlorinates the water, doses beneficial bacteria, and runs the system in. We walk you through operation and hand over a simple maintenance schedule.

When You Need Custom Pond Design & Construction

A custom-designed pond is the right call when:

  • You want a true centerpiece for the yard — a well-built pond with moving water and fish is the feature every guest gravitates to. It turns a flat lawn into a destination, and the sound of water changes how the whole yard feels.
  • You want it to stay clear, not turn into a green swamp — the difference between a beautiful pond and a maintenance nightmare is biology and filtration, designed in from the start. We build balanced ecosystems, not holes full of water.
  • You want the pond to fit your space — sloped lots, tight courtyards, front entries, and awkward corners. Custom design lets the pond fit the yard rather than the other way around.
  • Preformed kits and big-box liners don’t cut it — thin preformed shells crack, undersized kit pumps fail, and rigid liners look artificial. Custom construction uses professional-grade materials that last.
  • You want fish, plants, or both — a pond designed for koi and goldfish needs proper depth, aeration, and filtration; a water garden needs planting shelves and the right plant palette. We design for what you want to keep.
  • You’re adding a waterfall, stream, or fountain — moving water keeps a pond oxygenated and clear. We integrate falls and streams into the design so the plumbing, sound, and look all work together.
  • You want low-water, low-chemical operation — a properly balanced ecosystem pond uses far less water than a lawn of the same size and little to no chemicals once established.

What Affects the Cost of Custom Pond Design & Construction

Custom pond pricing varies with size, depth, rockwork, and filtration. The number depends on:

  • Size and depth. A small 6'×8' water garden is the entry point. Mid-sized ecosystem ponds are the most common. Large koi ponds and water gardens with streams scale up from there.
  • Rockwork. The volume of boulder and gravel — and how naturalistic the stone-setting is — is often the biggest single line item. Hand-set boulder waterfalls cost more than a simple gravel edge.
  • Filtration and pump. Fish ponds need more filtration and turnover than ornamental ponds. Larger volumes need larger, more efficient pumps.
  • Access and excavation. Easy machine access is cheap; hand-digging a backyard with no gate access, or hauling out heavy clay or rock, adds labor.
  • Waterfalls and streams. Added falls and streams increase excavation, liner, plumbing, and rockwork — but they’re what make the pond come alive.
  • Permits and drainage. Depth, location, and local code sometimes trigger a permit or fencing requirement. We handle it and fold it into the quote.

We'll quote your build flat-rate after the design phase — liner, filtration, pump, rockwork, planting, and startup all included.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to build a custom pond in Los Angeles?

Most residential ponds run 1–3 weeks of construction once design is approved. Design and concept take about 1–2 weeks. Excavation, liner, and plumbing are a few days. Rockwork, planting, fill, and biological startup finish it out. Large ponds with streams and heavy rockwork take longer.

Will the pond stay clear or turn green?

A properly built pond stays clear because the biology is designed in — right filtration, right pump turnover, aeration, aquatic plants, and beneficial bacteria all working together. Green water comes from undersized filtration and no biological balance, which is exactly what we engineer against.

How much maintenance does a pond need?

Far less than people expect once it’s balanced. A skimmer catches debris, the biofilter does the heavy lifting, and plants outcompete algae. Expect a seasonal cleanout, occasional filter rinses, and topping off for evaporation. We hand over a simple schedule and offer maintenance plans.

Do I need a permit for a pond in Los Angeles?

It depends on depth, size, and location. Many ornamental ponds don’t require one, but deeper ponds or those near structures can trigger a permit, drainage review, or a fencing/barrier requirement. We check the local code and pull whatever’s required.

What does a custom pond cost?

Small water gardens are the entry point; large koi ponds and natural water gardens with streams and heavy rockwork are the top end. We give a flat-rate quote after the design phase — liner, filtration, pump, rockwork, planting, and startup all included, no surprises.
